Project Description

AMAGNIT 501 Non-Magnetic Steel for Directional Drilling

AMAGNIT 501 non-magnetic peeled and drilled round bar for directional drilling
AMAGNIT 501 Non-Magnetic Steel Round Bar

AMAGNIT 501 is a premium chromium manganese austenitic low carbon alloy steel, engineered specifically for the extreme demands of directional drilling and downhole environments. Manufactured utilizing the advanced VOD process and rotary hammer warm forging, this material achieves a unique balance of microstructural purity and mechanical integrity.

As a highly reliable stress corrosion cracking resistant steel, AMAGNIT 501 prevents premature tool failure in aggressive chloride-rich downhole fluids. Furthermore, it serves as an exceptional anti-galling stainless steel, eliminating the tendency for tool seizing under high friction, while consistently maintaining low magnetic permeability to ensure accurate MWD/LWD sensor readings.

Supplied primarily as an AMAGNIT 501 peeled and drilled round bar, it provides immediate operational reliability for critical drill string components. Within the context of non-magnetic drilling materials, AMAGNIT 501 represents a specialized austenitic variant often cross-referenced by downstream buyers, distinct from traditional martensitic 5Cr-0.5Mo steels. You can explore our broader comprehensive range of non-magnetic steels for various downhole requirements.

Applications of AMAGNIT 501 Non-Magnetic Steel

Specifically designed for drill string components in directional drilling, AMAGNIT 501 non-magnetic steel is utilized in the following downstream products and scenarios:

  • Drill Collars: Standard and heavyweight collars requiring high structural rigidity and zero magnetic interference. Explore our dedicated drill collar product category for compatible options.
  • MWD and LWD Housings: Measurement-While-Drilling and Logging-While-Drilling tool enclosures where low magnetic permeability is critical for sensor accuracy.
  • Compressive Service Drill Pipe (Flex Collars): Flexible drill pipe subs subjected to cyclic bending and compressive stresses. See related specifications in our drill pipe inventory.
  • Stabilizers: Downhole stabilizers requiring resistance to galling and wear against the wellbore wall.
  • Subs and Cross-overs: Various drilling subs experiencing high torque and frictional loading.
  • Mining & Rock Drilling: Heavy-duty rock drill steel components demanding high impact toughness and anti-galling properties.

Specifications and Chemical Composition

ASTM A262 (Practice E)
Standard Practices for Detecting Susceptibility to Intergranular Attack in Austenitic Stainless Steels (Intergranular corrosion testing).
ASTM G36 / G38
Standard Practices for Evaluating Stress-Corrosion-Cracking Resistance of Metals (C-ring testing in chloride environments).
Product Form
Forged round steel bar (peeled and drilled).

AMAGNIT 501 Chemical Composition

Chemical composition ranges for AMAGNIT 501 manufactured via the VOD process
Element AMAGNIT 501 (VOD Process)
C 0.05 max
Mn 18.5 - 22.0
Cr 13.0 - 15.0
Mo 1.00 max
Ni 2.00 max
N2 0.25 - 0.50

The nitrogen (N2) range of 0.25-0.50 is a specific and critical addition in this Cr-Mn austenitic grade. It stabilizes the austenitic structure and enhances mechanical strength, differing significantly from standard non-nitrogenated stainless steels.

Mechanical and Magnetic Properties

Tensile and Hardness Requirements

AMAGNIT 501 non-magnetic steel is tested at room temperature per ASTM A370. The following table outlines minimum mechanical property requirements based on outer diameter ranges:

Mechanical property requirements by OD range for AMAGNIT 501 steel

Magnetic Permeability and Corrosion Resistance

As-delivered, the material guarantees stringent magnetic and intergranular corrosion performance:

  • Magnetic Permeability: Max 1.010 / Average 1.005
  • Magnetic Field Gradient (Hot Spots): Max 0.05 micro-tesla / 100 mm
  • Intergranular Attack: No cracks detected per ASTM A262 Practice E

Melting Routes and Heat Treatment

Primary Melting and Refining Processes

SHUNFU METAL offers flexible melting routes to match specific project requirements. The standard route is EAF + AOD + LF + VD, ensuring high purity for austenitic alloys.

For elevated structural requirements, we can supply AMAGNIT 501 ESR supplied steel or PESR to further reduce non-metallic inclusions. For the most demanding downhole applications, a VIM + VAR route is available. Customers are welcome to consult with our metallurgical team to select the optimal melting process. We supply various forms including solid bars and hollow bars per project requirements.

Proprietary Warm Forging and Treatment

AMAGNIT 501 non-magnetic steel achieves its required mechanical properties and low magnetic permeability directly through its proprietary chemical analysis combined with the VOD process and rotary hammer warm forging temperature/time cycles. This is followed by a compressive layer application to the bore. Therefore, conventional quenching and tempering treatments are not standard for this grade.

Surface Finish, Machining, and Quality Assurance

Precision Machining Capabilities

SHUNFU METAL provides comprehensive surface finishing and precision machining for AMAGNIT 501 to meet stringent downhole specifications. Standard delivery includes peeled (turned) and drilled surfaces via BTA Boring and Long Distance Gunhole Drilling. This achieves an internal surface roughness of Ra ≤ 3.2 μm and dimensional tolerances of ±0.5 mm.

For enhanced precision, we offer CNC turning and milling (Ra ≤ 1.6 μm, tolerances ±0.1 mm), grinding (Ra ≤ 0.8 μm), and roller burnishing for the bore to apply the necessary compressive stress layer. Shot peening is available for external surfaces to further improve fatigue life.

Quality Assurance and Inspection

SHUNFU METAL, certified by API Q1 and ISO 9001, enforces rigorous quality control across pre-production, in-process, and post-production stages. UT is performed per recognized standards to detect internal discontinuities. Chemical composition analysis, mechanical property testing (ASTM A370), dimensional inspections, and metallographic structure verification are systematically executed.

For this grade, specific intergranular corrosion testing (ASTM A262 Practice E) and stress corrosion cracking tests (Constant Load, SSR, C-Ring per ASTM G36/G38) are mandatory. We issue EN 10204 3.1 certificates by default, with 3.2 certificates available upon request. Third-party inspections by SGS or TÜV can be seamlessly arranged.
