Project Description
LDX 2101 UNS S32101 (EN 1.4162, X2CrMnNiN21-5-1) is a lean duplex stainless steel with a balanced 50/50 austenite-ferrite microstructure. Engineered by Outokumpu as a low-nickel alternative to conventional 300-series austenitics, LDX 2101 replaces much of the costly nickel with manganese and nitrogen while retaining a molybdenum addition for pitting resistance. The PREN of 26–28 rivals that of standard 316L, yet the stabilized low-nickel chemistry (only ~1.5 % Ni) insulates buyers from nickel price volatility—a significant advantage in budget-sensitive oil and gas capital projects. Yield strength of at least 450 MPa is roughly double that of 304L/316L, enabling thinner-wall designs, lighter lift weights, and direct material tonnage savings. The ferritic phase provides immunity to chloride SCC, a failure mode that plagues austenitic stainless steels in hot chloride service above 60°C. SHUNFU METAL supplies LDX 2101 bar under ISO 9001:2015 and API Q1 certified quality systems, with full melt-to-shipment traceability and NACE MR0175/ISO 15156-3 sour-service compliance where specified. Every heat undergoes incoming OES verification followed by solution annealing at 1020–1100°C with water quenching to lock in the balanced duplex microstructure before machining or shipment.
Equivalent Grades of LDX 2101
LDX 2101 is the Outokumpu trade name with limited direct international equivalents—it is a proprietary lean duplex chemistry not replicated in JIS or GOST standards. SHUNFU METAL certifies every bar to the buyer’s specified standard from the table below, with EN 10204 3.1 mill test reports as standard. The alloy is qualified under NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156-3 for sour hydrocarbon service up to its hardness limit of 290 HB.

LDX 2101 Bar in Oil & Gas Applications
LDX 2101 bar machined into flanges, fittings, and spool connectors for produced-water and injection-water lines, where SCC immunity and PREN ≥26 resist chloride attack without the cost of 316L or 2205.
Bar stock turned into manway bolts, nozzle flanges, and roof-support hardware for atmospheric and low-pressure crude tanks. Higher strength permits lighter structural sections than 304L equivalents.
Electrostatic grid support rods, weir adjusters, and distributor bars for crude desalting vessels. LDX 2101 withstands the high-chloride brine phase and offers magnetic properties useful for level sensing.
Production and test manifold blocks, studded cross-connectors, and isolation valve stems. The 450 MPa minimum yield allows compact manifold designs with reduced bolt-circle diameters.
Gate, globe, and ball valve stems and seat rings for moderate-pressure hydrocarbon and water service. NACE MR0175 compliance covers sour-gas exposure up to the material’s hardness limit of 290 HB.
Centrifugal and progressive-cavity pump shafts for water-flood and transfer service. Good fatigue strength (~300 MPa) and erosion-corrosion resistance extend run life in solids-laden produced water.
Machined pad-eyes, hinge plates, and pipe-support brackets for topsides and subsea structures. The high strength-to-weight ratio reduces topside payload while the duplex structure resists marine atmospheric corrosion.
Tie rods, spacers, and baffle-support bars for shell-and-tube exchangers in crude preheat and overhead condenser service. Thermal expansion coefficient (~13.0 μm/m·°C) closely matches carbon steel shells, reducing differential expansion stress.
Weld-neck and blind flanges, socket-weld couplings, and threaded plugs per ASME B16.5/B16.11. SHUNFU METAL supplies LDX 2101 bar in diameters suitable for direct flange machining up to NPS 12.
LDX 2101 Bar Supply Range
SHUNFU METAL stocks and produces LDX 2101 bar under ISO 9001 and API Q1 certified systems. Incoming billets are verified by OES before rolling or forging; every finished bar ships with full EN 10204 3.1 certification. Solution annealing at 1020–1100°C followed by water quenching is mandatory; SHUNFU METAL verifies quench effectiveness via ferrite content measurement and Charpy impact testing per NACE MR0175 requirements. The alloy must be quenched rapidly to avoid detrimental sigma-phase precipitation in the 550–950°C range.
| Form | Diameter Range | Length |
|---|---|---|
| Hot-Rolled Round Bar | 10–200 mm (0.39–7.87 in) | 3–6 m |
| Hot-Rolled Flat Bar | Th. 5–60 mm × W. 20–200 mm | 3–6 m |
| Forged Round Bar | 100–600 mm (3.94–23.62 in) | 2–5 m |
| Forged Flat / Block | Th. 20–200 mm × W. up to 400 mm | 2–4 m |
| Peeled / Turned Round Bar | 10–150 mm (h9 / k12 tolerance) | 3–6 m |
LDX 2101 should not be used at sustained temperatures above 250°C due to risk of 475°C embrittlement.
Chemical Composition of LDX 2101
Composition below per ASTM A240/A276 and EN 10088-3. SHUNFU METAL sources only fully certified heats with full-spectrum OES verification at incoming inspection; nitrogen content is additionally confirmed by IGF analysis due to its critical role in phase balance and strength. The Mn-N-Ni balance is carefully controlled to achieve the target 50/50 austenite-ferrite ratio without excessive nickel cost—manganese serves as an austenite stabilizer in place of nickel, while nitrogen provides both austenite stabilization and interstitial solid-solution strengthening. Copper (0.10–0.80 %) is a deliberate addition that further enhances corrosion resistance in reducing acid environments encountered in refinery crude distillation and hydroprocessing units.

Fe balance. PREN = %Cr + 3.3 × %Mo + 16 × %N ≈ 26–28, competitive with 316L without the nickel cost.
Mechanical Properties of LDX 2101
Properties below represent ASTM A479 minimum requirements for solution-annealed LDX 2101 bar. Annealing at 1020–1100°C with rapid water quenching is mandatory to dissolve intermetallic phases and restore the balanced duplex microstructure. At SHUNFU METAL, every batch is hardness-tested and tensile-certified; ferrite content is verified at 40–60% by metallographic image analysis per ASTM E562.
| Condition | Tensile Rm (MPa) | Yield Rp0.2 (MPa) | Elong. A5 (%) | Hardness (HB) | Charpy-V -40°C (J) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Annealed | ≥650 | ≥450 | ≥30 | ≤290 | ≥27 |
The combination of 450 MPa minimum yield and 30% minimum elongation places LDX 2101 in a unique position—its strength-to-weight ratio is roughly double that of 304L and 316L while retaining ample ductility for cold forming and machining. Elastic modulus is 200 GPa, thermal conductivity 15 W/m·K at 100°C, and thermal expansion coefficient 13.0 μm/m·°C. The alloy is not hardenable by heat treatment; strength gains are achieved only through cold working. At SHUNFU METAL, longitudinal Charpy V-notch impact testing at -40°C is performed on every forging lot to verify toughness for arctic and subsea service conditions.
