1.7362, designated as X12CrMo5 under EN and also known as 12CrMo19-5, is a 5Cr-0.5Mo ferritic alloy heat-resistant steel bar engineered for prolonged elevated-temperature service up to 600°C in oil refinery hydrocrackers, petrochemical pressure vessels, and power generation equipment. Equivalent to ASTM A387 Grade 5 / A182 F5 / A335 P5, this grade delivers exceptional hydrogen attack resistance, high-temperature oxidation resistance, and reliable creep rupture strength. This Cr-Mo alloy steel, standardized under EN 10028-2, EN 10273, and EN 10216-2, is the benchmark 5% chromium grade for sustained elevated-temperature pressure boundary service. With approximately 5% Cr and 0.5% Mo, 1.7362 provides superior resistance to high-temperature hydrogen attack (HTHA), excellent oxidation resistance, and good creep strength — substantially outperforming the lower-chromium 2.25Cr-1Mo grade in hot hydrogen and sulfur-bearing environments up to 600°C. Globally specified as ASTM A387 Gr.5 (plate), A335 P5 (seamless tube), A182 F5 (forgings), and JIS STBA25 / SCMV5, 1.7362 is the preferred material for hydrocracker reactor components, hot hydrogen piping, and high-temperature heat exchanger shells in the world’s most critical refinery units. At SHUNFU METAL, 1.7362 bars are manufactured via electric arc furnace melting with ladle furnace refining and vacuum degassing, ensuring ultra-low sulfur and phosphorus levels (S ≤ 0.005%, P ≤ 0.020%). For critical applications, electro-slag remelting (ESR) is available to further refine microstructure and cleanliness. Bars are hot-rolled on a GFM radial forging machine or open-die forged on a 6,000-ton hydraulic press, then normalize at 920–960°C and tempered at 680–740°C to achieve the specified mechanical properties and hardness. Every bar undergoes 100% ultrasonic testing per EN 10228-3 Class 3, with complete chemical, tensile, impact, and hardness results documented in an EN 10204 Type 3.1 or 3.2 certificate. Third-party inspection by SGS, TÜV, DNV, or Bureau Veritas is supported.

The chemical composition conforms to EN 10028-2 X12CrMo5, with tighter residual element controls applied for critical hydrogen service. The 5% Cr – 0.5% Mo alloy design provides outstanding resistance to high-temperature hydrogen attack (HTHA), excellent oxidation resistance, and reliable creep rupture strength at sustained temperatures up to 600°C, making 1.7362 the superior choice over lower-chromium grades for the most demanding refinery hydroprocessing and hot hydrogen environments.

Values in weight percent (wt%). Iron (Fe) balance. Nitrogen ≤ 0.012%; Copper ≤ 0.30%; Nickel ≤ 0.30%. For critical hydrogen service, SHUNFU METAL restricts sulfur to ≤0.005% and phosphorus to ≤0.015%. ASTM A182 F5 specification allows slightly broader Mn (0.30–0.60%) and Mo (0.45–0.65%) ranges. All heats are verified by optical emission spectrometry (OES) with full traceability to the originating heat number.

Mechanical Properties of 1.7362 / X12CrMo5

In the normalized and tempered (+NT) condition per EN 10028-2, 1.7362 delivers a balanced combination of strength, ductility, and impact toughness across all section thicknesses. SHUNFU METAL applies controlled normalizing at 920–960°C with air cooling, followed by tempering at 680–740°C to achieve the specified mechanical properties. For quenched and tempered (+QT) condition, oil quenching from 900–950°C with tempering at 600–700°C is available for thicker sections.

For quenched and tempered (+QT) condition (typically for sections >150 mm): tensile 410–560 MPa, yield ≥275 MPa, elongation ≥22%, hardness ≤179 HB.
