Steel Grade: ASTM A694 F60
SHUNFU METAL

1. Introduction

ASTM A694 F60 steel bar
ASTM A694 F60 Steel Bar

ASTM A694 F60 is a HSLA / carbon steel grade specified under ASTM A694/A694M for forged pipe flanges, fittings, valves, and components used in high-pressure liquid transmission systems. The “F60” designation indicates a minimum yield strength of 60 ksi (415 MPa), positioning it as a higher-strength variant within the A694 family. SHUNFU METAL supplies ASTM A694 F60 steel bars manufactured via EAF + LF + VD melting, followed by precise forging and heat treatment.

This grade is widely adopted in oil & gas transmission pipelines, offshore platforms, subsea manifolds, and refinery systems where reliable high-pressure containment is essential. The material can be supplied as carbon steel, HSLA steel, or alloy steel depending on end-user requirements, with mandatory full deoxidation during melting. SHUNFU METAL ensures all F60 bars meet the stringent mechanical property requirements of ASTM A694 with UT inspection per EN 10228-3 and full documentation per EN 10204 Type 3.1 certification.

2. Equivalent Grades

Standard Grade / Designation Product Form Remarks
API 5L X60 / L415 Line Pipe Equivalent yield strength; similar application scope
EN 10028-3 P355N / P355NH Plate Comparable strength level; pressure vessel grade
ASTM A707 L5 (alloy variant) Forgings Specified as reference alloy composition in A694
ISO 3183 L415 / X60 Line Pipe International equivalent for transmission pipe

Note: Equivalent grades are based on comparable minimum yield strength and application environment. Chemical composition may vary. SHUNFU METAL verifies equivalency against each specific purchase order requirement.

3. Typical Applications

Pipeline Flanges

Weld neck, slip-on, and blind flanges for high-pressure transmission lines per ASME B16.5 / B16.47, rated for Class 600, 900, and 1500 service. SHUNFU METAL forged bars are ideal starting stock for flange machining.

Valve Bodies & Bonnets

Ball valves, gate valves, and check valves for oil & gas pipeline isolation and flow control. The 60 ksi yield ensures structural integrity under cyclic pressure loads.

Butt-Weld Fittings

Elbows, tees, reducers, and caps per MSS SP-75 and ASME B16.9 for high-pressure transmission piping. F60 matches the strength requirement for Class 3 and Class 4 fittings.

Subsea Manifolds

Forged blocks and connectors for subsea production systems operating at depths exceeding 1,500 m. SHUNFU METAL supplies F60 bars qualified for sour service per NACE MR0175.

Offshore Risers

Connectors and flange components for offshore drilling and production risers. F60 provides the yield-to-tensile ratio needed for fatigue-critical marine applications.

Pump & Compressor Casings

Forged housings for multistage centrifugal pumps and reciprocating compressors in pipeline booster stations. SHUNFU METAL bars offer excellent machinability after Q+T treatment.

Flow Control Equipment

Choke bodies, flow tees, and wellhead components requiring 415 MPa minimum yield. Widely used in onshore gathering systems and gas processing plants.

Pipeline Pig Launchers/Receivers

Forged end closures and quick-opening doors for pigging stations on long-distance crude oil and natural gas transmission lines.

SHUNFU METAL can supply ASTM A694 F60 steel bars in custom dimensions, non-standard diameters, and special lengths upon request. All forged bars undergo 100% ultrasonic testing per EN 10228-3 / ASTM A388 and are delivered with EN 10204 Type 3.1 mill certificates. NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 compliance for sour service is available when specified in the purchase order.

5. Chemical Composition (Heat Analysis, wt%)

Key notes:

  • ASTM A694 permits three material categories: carbon steel, HSLA steel, or alloy steel. For alloy steel variants, the composition shall conform to A707 Grade L5.
  • Ni, Cr, Mo, Cu, V, Nb, and B must be reported in the heat analysis. Where no limits are specified, no restriction applies except as governed by Section 6.3 of A961/A961M.
  • SHUNFU METAL’s baseline F60 typically uses a C-Mn or C-Mn-Nb-V microalloyed approach with controlled CEIIW (≤ 0.45) for excellent field weldability.
  • * CEIIW = C + Mn/6 + (Cr+Mo+V)/5 + (Ni+Cu)/15. The 0.45 max is a SHUNFU METAL internal target for sour service and low-temperature toughness applications; ASTM A694 does not mandate a CE limit.

* Yield-to-tensile ratio and Charpy impact requirements marked with asterisk are supplementary requirements (per S4 / S5 of ASTM A694) and apply only when specified in the purchase order. SHUNFU METAL routinely achieves these values in Q+T condition and can supply with full low-temperature impact test reports. Heat treatment options include Normalizing (N), Normalizing + Tempering (N+T), or Quenching + Tempering (Q+T), with a minimum tempering temperature of 540 °C (1000 °F) for carbon and HSLA grades.

7. Heat Treatment & Quality Assurance

ASTM A694 mandates that all forgings shall be heat treated. SHUNFU METAL applies the following heat treatment routes based on product section size and end-use requirements:

Normalizing (N)

Heated to 880–930 °C, air cooled. Refines grain structure and provides uniform mechanical properties for carbon steel variants.

Normalizing + Tempering (N+T)

Normalized then tempered at ≥ 540 °C. Improves toughness while maintaining required strength. Standard route for HSLA grades.

Quenching + Tempering (Q+T)

Water or polymer quenched from 880–920 °C, tempered at ≥ 540 °C. Achieves optimum strength-toughness balance for thick sections and sour service.

SHUNFU METAL’s quality assurance program for ASTM A694 F60 includes: full spectrochemical analysis per ASTM A751, tensile testing at room temperature per ASTM A370, hardness testing per ASTM E10, Charpy V-notch impact testing per ASTM E23 (when specified), 100% ultrasonic testing per EN 10228-3 / ASTM A388, grain size determination per ASTM E112, and PMI (Positive Material Identification) verification. All material is supplied with EN 10204 Type 3.1 certification.
