ASTM A694 F42 is a high-yield carbon steel forging grade supplied by SHUNFU METAL for high-pressure transmission pipeline flanges, forged fittings, valve bodies, and wellhead components in oil and gas gathering, midstream, and refinery service. Covering nine strength levels from F42 through F70, the A694 specification is the industry benchmark for HPTS pipeline forgings—and F42 serves as the entry-point strength grade widely specified for ASME B16.5 flanges, MSS SP-44 pipeline flanges, and ASME B16.11 forged fittings in Class 150 through Class 2500 pressure ratings. Its balanced 290 MPa minimum yield strength combined with excellent weldability and low-temperature toughness make F42 the cost-effective standard choice for onshore and offshore natural gas transmission systems, crude oil gathering networks, and compressor/pumping station pipework where proven reliability is paramount.
Introduction to ASTM A694 F42
ASTM A694/A694M covers carbon and alloy steel forgings for pipe flanges, fittings, valves, and parts for high-pressure transmission service. Grade F42 requires a minimum yield strength of 290 MPa (42 ksi) and minimum tensile strength of 415 MPa (60 ksi), with elongation not less than 20%. As a carbon or carbon-manganese steel, F42 is typically supplied in the normalized or normalized-and-tempered condition with ferrite-plus-pearlite microstructure. F42 is the forged-component counterpart to API 5L X42 line pipe, forming a matched-strength piping system for gathering and transmission pipelines where Class 150 to Class 2500 flanges and forged fittings are required. SHUNFU METAL manufactures F42 forged bars from EAF-melted, ladle-refined heats with controlled phosphorus and sulfur below 0.020%, open-die forged on our 6,000-ton hydraulic press with a minimum 3:1 forging reduction ratio, and normalized to ASTM A694 requirements with full digital furnace chart traceability for every production lot.

Note: ASTM A694 is a performance-based specification—grades are defined by minimum yield strength, not by a fixed chemical composition. Unlike alloy forging standards such as A182 F11/F22, A694 does not prescribe specific Cr-Mo content. The API 5L X42/L290 cross-reference is approximate and for strength-level matching only. Mechanical properties and chemistry shall be verified per individual purchase order and applicable revision of the governing standards. All F42 bars originate from EAF + LF refined heats with phosphorus and sulfur controlled to ≤0.020%—well below the ASTM A694 limits of 0.025% max each. Forging is performed at 1,100–1,200°C initial temperature with finishing above 850°C to ensure a minimum 3:1 reduction ratio and complete refinement of the as-cast structure. Post-forge, bars undergo controlled slow cooling to ambient followed by normalizing at 870–920°C with air cooling. Bars destined for sour service undergo additional tempering at minimum 540°C with hardness verification at multiple representative locations. SHUNFU METAL Internal Controls:
A694 is a performance specification—composition is not rigidly fixed. This gives experienced mills freedom to optimize chemistry for the target properties. SHUNFU METAL designs each F42 heat with controlled residual elements: Cu ≤ 0.20%, Ni ≤ 0.20%, Cr ≤ 0.20%, Mo ≤ 0.08%—all well below the reporting thresholds to ensure consistent mechanical properties across all section sizes.
Microalloying with Nb and/or V (typically 0.02–0.04% Nb) is selectively applied to heavier sections to achieve uniform through-thickness strength without compromising weldability. The low carbon equivalent (CE ≤ 0.43) ensures excellent field weldability using standard AWS E7018 or ER70S-6 consumables with minimal preheat (50–100°C).
For sour service F42 grades, S is further restricted to ≤0.005% with calcium treatment for inclusion shape control, meeting HIC/SWC testing requirements per NACE TM0284 Solution A.
Carbon equivalent CE = C + Mn/6 + (Cr+Mo+V)/5 + (Ni+Cu)/15 calculated per product specification. SHUNFU METAL reports CE on every material test certificate for direct verification.

Heat Treatment (ASTM A694):
Carbon Steel & HSLA: Normalize, normalize + temper, or quench + temper. Minimum tempering temperature: 540°C (1,000°F). Normalizing temperature: 870–920°C with air cooling.
Alloy Steel Variants: Normalize + precipitation heat treatment, or quench + precipitation heat treatment at 540–665°C (1,000–1,225°F).
SHUNFU METAL heat treats every F42 bar in calibrated batch or car-bottom furnaces with ±10°C temperature uniformity, automated chart recorders logging time-temperature curves for the entire dwell period, and digital data archives retrievable for any production lot back to 2015.
Charpy Impact: Available at −20°C, −30°C, −46°C down to −50°C per customer specification. Typical F42 CVN at −29°C: 40–90 J (transverse), exceeding typical 27 J minimum.
NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 Sour Service: Max hardness 22 HRC (~237 HBW) for all sour service grades. SHUNFU METAL achieves consistently ≤15 HRC (~150 HBW) on properly tempered F42 heats, providing ample margin for PWHT and field welding without risk of exceeding the hardness cap.
Welding Qualification Note: F42 is a P-No. 1 base metal per ASME Section IX (carbon steel). Weld procedure qualification is straightforward using AWS E7018 / E71T-1 consumables. Post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) at 590–650°C may be required for heavy sections per ASME B31.3 or B31.8 code requirements.
