Project Description

ASTM A694 F52 is a high-yield carbon/HSLA steel forging grade supplied by SHUNFU METAL for high-pressure transmission pipeline flanges, forged fittings, valve bodies, and wellhead components in oil and gas gathering, midstream transmission, and gas processing plant service. Covering nine strength levels from F42 through F70, the A694 specification is the industry benchmark for HPTS pipeline forgings—and F52 occupies the widely specified mid-range strength level balancing higher pressure capability with field-proven weldability for ASME B16.5 flanges, MSS SP-44 pipeline flanges, and ASME B16.11 forged fittings in Class 150 through Class 2500 pressure ratings. Its 360 MPa minimum yield strength forms a matched-strength system with API 5L X52 line pipe, making F52 the most frequently ordered A694 grade in natural gas transmission, crude oil trunk lines, and compressor/pumping station pipework where higher design pressure and reduced wall thickness are required compared with F42. SHUNFU METAL manufactures F52 forged bars from EAF-melted, LF-refined, fully deoxidized heats with controlled microalloy additions and open-die forges under a minimum 3:1 reduction ratio on our 6,000-ton hydraulic press, followed by normalizing with digital furnace chart traceability for every production lot.

Introduction to ASTM A694 F52

ASTM A694/A694M covers carbon and alloy steel forgings for pipe flanges, fittings, valves, and parts for high-pressure transmission service. Grade F52 requires a minimum yield strength of 360 MPa (52 ksi) and minimum tensile strength of 455 MPa (66 ksi), with elongation not less than 20%. As a carbon-manganese or microalloyed HSLA steel, F52 is typically supplied in the normalized or normalized-and-tempered condition with fine-grained ferrite-plus-pearlite microstructure. F52 is the forged-component counterpart to API 5L X52 / L360 line pipe and ASTM A860 WPHY-52 butt-weld fittings, forming a complete matched-strength piping system for transmission pipelines where Class 300 to Class 900 flanges and forged fittings are required. SHUNFU METAL manufactures F52 forged bars from EAF-melted, ladle-refined heats with controlled phosphorus and sulfur below 0.018%, open-die forged on our 6,000-ton hydraulic press with a minimum 3:1 forging reduction ratio, and normalized with tight temperature control ±10°C to achieve uniform mechanical properties across all section sizes from 100 mm to 1,200 mm diameter.

Note: ASTM A694 is a performance-based specification—grades are defined by minimum yield strength, not fixed chemistry. The API 5L X52/L360 and A860 WPHY-52 cross-references are for strength-level matching per ASME B31.8/B31.3 system design. EN P355N/NH is approximate and must verify CVN requirements per project. A105 and A350 LF2 are NOT yield-strength equivalents. SHUNFU METAL certifies every heat to the exact ASTM A694 edition and project-specific requirements in the customer PO. Full MTR with heat analysis, tensile, hardness, and Charpy impact are provided as standard for every production lot.

All F52 bars originate from EAF + LF refined, fully killed heats with aluminum or silicon deoxidation. SHUNFU METAL targets phosphorus ≤0.018% and sulfur ≤0.015%—below the ASTM A694 limit of 0.025% each—and applies microalloying with controlled Nb (0.015–0.035%) and/or V (0.02–0.05%) to achieve consistent through-thickness strength in heavier sections. Forging is performed at 1,100–1,200°C initial temperature with finishing above 850°C, ensuring a minimum 3:1 reduction ratio and complete refinement of the as-cast dendritic structure. Post-forge, bars undergo controlled slow cooling to ambient, followed by normalizing at 870–920°C with forced air cooling. For sour service grades, additional tempering at minimum 540°C with multi-point hardness verification is performed on every bar. Full OES chemical verification, tensile testing per ASTM A370, and Charpy V-notch impact testing at customer-specified temperatures (typically −20°C to −46°C) are standard deliverables with complete heat-to-bar traceability.

SHUNFU METAL Internal Controls:

A694 is a performance-based specification without rigidly fixed chemistry. SHUNFU METAL designs each F52 heat with controlled residual elements: Cu ≤ 0.20%, Ni ≤ 0.20%, Cr ≤ 0.20%, Mo ≤ 0.08%—all within reporting thresholds to ensure predictable mechanical response and consistent welding behavior across all section sizes.

Microalloying with Nb and/or V provides grain refinement during normalizing, delivering the 360 MPa minimum yield requirement in sections up to 200 mm thickness without requiring quench-and-temper treatment. The controlled carbon equivalent (CE ≤ 0.42) ensures excellent field weldability using standard AWS E7018 or ER70S-6 consumables with 50–100°C preheat and no mandatory PWHT for wall thicknesses below 32 mm per ASME B31.8.

For sour service F52 grades, S is further restricted to ≤0.005% with calcium treatment for inclusion shape control, meeting HIC testing requirements per NACE TM0284 Solution A and SSC per NACE TM0177 Method A.

Carbon equivalent CE = C + Mn/6 + (Cr+Mo+V)/5 + (Ni+Cu)/15, calculated per IIW formula and reported on every MTC. SHUNFU METAL provides CE values to support weld procedure qualification and eliminate downstream rework.

Heat Treatment (ASTM A694):

Carbon Steel & HSLA: Normalize, normalize + temper, or quench + temper. Minimum tempering temperature: 540°C (1,000°F). SHUNFU METAL normalizes F52 bars at 880–920°C with forced air cooling and optional temper at 550–620°C for stress relief and hardness control.

Alloy Steel Variants: Normalize + precipitation heat treatment, or quench + precipitation heat treatment at 540–665°C (1,000–1,225°F) per ASTM A694 requirements.

SHUNFU METAL heat treats every F52 bar in calibrated batch furnaces with ±10°C temperature uniformity, automated digital chart recorders capturing full time-temperature profiles, and retrievable heat treatment records archived back to 2015 for any production lot.

Charpy Impact: Available at −20°C, −29°C, −46°C down to −50°C per customer requirement. Typical F52 CVN at −29°C: 45–85 J (transverse), exceeding the common 27 J minimum for most pipeline codes.

NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 Sour Service: Max hardness 22 HRC (~237 HBW). SHUNFU METAL’s tempered F52 heats consistently achieve ≤16 HRC (~160 HBW), providing substantial margin for PWHT and field welding without risk of exceeding the sour service hardness limit.

Welding Qualification Note: F52 is a P-No. 1 base metal per ASME Section IX (carbon steel). WPS can be qualified using AWS E7018 / E71T-1 consumables for SMAW/FCAW or ER70S-6 for GTAW/GMAW. PWHT at 590–650°C may be required per B31.3/B31.8 for wall thickness ≥ 32 mm.
