API oil pipe specification system

API Standard is a general term for specification (SPEC), recommended practice (RP) and notification (BUL). “Specification” To facilitate communication between purchasers and manufacturers, to provide interchangeability between the same equipment and materials purchased from different manufacturers and produced at different times; and to approve and issue documents for equipment and materials with adequate safety when used in the intended manner and for the intended purpose. “Recommended Practice” (Recommended Practice): Documents approved and published for the dissemination of proven and good engineering, design, fabrication, construction, installation, testing and operating practices within the oil and gas industry or related industries. “Bulletin”: A document approved and published for the purpose of informing the oil and gas industry and related industries of matters deemed inappropriate for operating specifications or recommended practices.

The contents included in API standards are: 1) definition of nomenclature; 2) classification of components; 3) description of procedures; 4) dimensional specifications; 5) guidelines for construction: materials, performance, design or operations; 6) measurement of quality and quantity when describing materials, products, systems, services or operations; 7) description of dimensional fit and measurement, etc.

For conventional API petroleum pipe product standards, there is already a comprehensive system of standards. In addition to product standards, the petroleum pipe standard system also contains supporting standards for product use performance and engineering design calculation, test inspection and engineering application.

Non-standard API Oil Pipe Specification System

It has been the common dream of the steel pipe industry and the oil and gas industry for a long time to improve the standard system for non-API oil pipes. However, there is still no product standard similar to API Spec 5CT or API Spec 5L that is commonly used in the world or even widely adopted in a certain country. At present, the delivery standard for non-API petroleum pipes generally adopts the API standard plus technical agreement. For non-API petroleum pipes, there is a great lack of universally applicable raw material product standards. This situation not only increases the investment of repeated R&D by each enterprise, but also more than 200 various varieties are not conducive to user design, evaluation, material selection, use and management.

In the decade of the 21st century, China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) Petroleum Tubular Engineering Research Institute (PTRI) organized a study on the standardization of non-API oil well pipes, established a standard system for non-API oil well pipes, and organized the drafting of 26 secondary enterprise standards of CNPC. These include Q/SY-TGRC 1 “High Extrusion Resistant Casing”, Q/SY-TGRC 3 “Corrosion Resistant Alloy Casing and Tubing” and other series standards, as well as Q/SYTGRC 2 “Recommended Practice for Selecting Carbon Steel and Low Alloy Tubing and Casing in H2S Containing Oil and Gas Field Environment”, Q/SY-TGRC 14 “Test Methods for Evaluating the Performance of Tubing and Casing Threaded Joints” and Q/SY-TGRC 17 “Test Methods for Evaluating the Performance of Tubing and Casing Threaded Joints”. SYTGRC 18 “Recommended Practice for Selection of Casing and Tubing in CO2 Containing Corrosive Environment” and other basic general standards. The product standards in the above-mentioned standards stipulate that “in accordance with the provisions of the supply and demand sides, the steel grade and material proposed by the manufacturer shall be preferred. However, the manufacturer shall provide evidence of meeting the requirements”, analyzing the reasons for such a provision, there are two points as follows.

  • Geological conditions and oil and gas composition vary from field to field, and the design selection of materials varies greatly.

(2) Steel pipe manufacturing and thread processing in the upstream steel pipe manufacturing plant, non-API products are developed by each enterprise according to its own equipment characteristics, process technology level, in terms of grade naming, material composition design, smelting and rolling process, heat treatment process, special buckle design, thread processing, etc., not only different, but also involves the technical know-how of enterprises.

Oil pipe standard system and non-standard system summary

(1) Oil drilling, transmission and refining are of high risk. Once an accident occurs in drilling operations or oil recovery operations, the lighter the cause of oil and gas wells scrapped, the loss of millions of dollars or even hundreds of millions of dollars; the heavier the cause of major personal injury or environmental disaster. Such as the 2003 Sichuan Kaixian blowout accident, the 2010 BP drilling rig in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico rented “Deepwater Horizon” explosion accident. Petroleum pipe products are used in high-risk operations, and the development of its standards should learn from API’s specifications and prudent standard-setting principles.

(2) For API standard products, if there is an equivalent ISO standard, the national or industry standard can be formulated by using ISO standard or modified; if there is no ISO standard, the national or industry standard can be formulated by using API standard or modified if authorized by API. After the development of these standards, since the products are not implementing API standards can not use API meeting standards, the global oil and gas industry, whether in China or abroad has not changed the status quo of accepting only API certified products, to achieve the long road to be adopted by the market.

(3) Non-API petroleum pipes have been developed for nearly 40 years, and there are very many official and unofficial organizations that wish to set their standards. With the introduction of group standards in China, many social organizations also see the vast space in this piece. Both official organizations and social groups should have a clear understanding of the special characteristics of non-API petroleum pipes, and have an accurate grasp of the difficulty of developing standards and their implementation after they are developed. Among the three types of non-API petroleum pipes, the non-standard specifications have a single use and lack the basis for separate standards for a specific working condition; the tooth shape and thread parameters of special threads and sealing structure have their own design peculiarities and there is no possibility of unification; the development of uniform standards for non-API steel grade petroleum pipes may mean that enterprises have to give up their independent intellectual property rights.

(4) Upstream steel pipe production plants and downstream design, testing and use units coordinate with each other to divide the work and cooperate, and jointly improve the standard system of non-API petroleum pipe. For the field of raw materials, without infringing the patent rights of enterprises, select individual varieties that can easily find common requirements, play the technical advantages of metallurgical enterprises in the field of steel materials, and cooperate with the needs of oil and gas drilling, transmission and other special-purpose conditions development, try to use the double numbering approach to carry out targeted development of pipe group standards, and promote to other varieties according to the application feedback; for the design In the field of design, the recommended practices for design and selection of materials are classified according to the working conditions; in the field of testing, the recommended practices for performance notification and technical evaluation and testing are classified according to product categories; in the field of application, the recommended practices for on-site acceptance, storage and use are classified.
