Project Description

430 stainless steel bar, designated UNS S43000, EN 1.4016 / X6Cr17, JIS SUS430, and GOST 12X17, is a ferritic chromium stainless steel containing 16-18% chromium with minimal nickel content. SHUNFU METAL supplies this cost-effective magnetic grade to the petroleum sector, where its balanced corrosion resistance, formability, and magnetic properties meet the demands of upstream drilling, gathering systems, and midstream pipeline operations. As a straight-chromium ferritic alloy, 430 offers a compelling price-to-performance ratio for components that do not require the higher pitting resistance of nickel-bearing austenitic grades.

What Is 430 Stainless Steel

SHUNFU METAL

AISI 430 belongs to the straight-chromium ferritic stainless steel family within the non-hardenable 400 series. Unlike austenitic alternatives such as 304 or 316, 430 contains negligible nickel, making it a substantially more economical choice for applications where extreme pitting resistance is not required. The alloy remains magnetic in all conditions and delivers good ductility and formability in the annealed state. Its thermal expansion coefficient is lower than that of austenitic grades, which makes 430 dimensionally stable in components subjected to temperature cycling, a valuable attribute in oilfield piping and tankage. At SHUNFU METAL, every heat of 430 bar is produced under ISO 9001:2015 and API Q1 certified quality management systems, with full traceability from melt to final shipment. Incoming billets undergo optical emission spectrometry (OES) verification against the target composition, and finished bars are ultrasonically tested to confirm internal soundness before final dimensional inspection and protective packaging.

SHUNFU METAL supplies 430 stainless steel bar certified to any of the above standards. Dual or multi-standard certification is available upon request, allowing a single heat to be documented against ASTM A276, EN 10088-3, and GOST 5632 simultaneously. This cross-standard capability simplifies procurement for international oilfield projects where end-user specifications may reference different national codes.

430 Bar in Oil & Gas Applications

430 ferritic stainless steel is employed across the petroleum value chain in components where moderate corrosion resistance, magnetic properties, and dimensional stability under thermal cycling are essential. The following table lists specific part names encountered in upstream production, midstream transmission, and downstream refining operations.

430 Stainless Steel Bar — Supply Dimensions

Product Form Diameter / Thickness Range Width Range Typical Length

Rolled Flat 3 mm – 80 mm 10 mm – 300 mm 3,000 – 6,000 mm

SHUNFU METAL maintains extensive mill inventory of 430 bar covering all four product forms. Non-standard diameters, tight tolerances down to h8/h9/k10, and cut-to-length services are supported. Each shipment is accompanied by a 3.1 material certificate per EN 10204 confirming heat number, full chemical analysis, mechanical test results, and dimensional compliance. For forged bars, SHUNFU METAL applies controlled reduction ratios and normalizing cycles to refine grain structure, yielding superior mechanical uniformity across the cross-section. Our integrated ISO 9001 and API Q1 production system ensures repeatable quality from prototype quantities through to multi-container export orders.

Chemical Composition of 430 (ASTM A276)

Element Carbon (C) Manganese (Mn) Silicon (Si) Phosphorus (P) Sulfur (S) Chromium (Cr) Nickel (Ni)
Weight % ≤ 0.12 ≤ 1.00 ≤ 1.00 ≤ 0.040 ≤ 0.030 16.0 – 18.0 ≤ 0.75

Composition per ASTM A276/A276M for stainless steel bars and shapes; EN 10088-3 limits for 1.4016 / X6Cr17 are materially identical. Iron (Fe) constitutes the balance. The 16-18% chromium content forms a self-healing passive chromium-oxide layer responsible for the alloy’s corrosion resistance in mild atmospheric, fresh-water, and oxidizing acid environments. SHUNFU METAL verifies every heat by OES against the above limits prior to release, and retains certified reference material for independent audit. All chemical certificates are permanently archived under our ISO 9001 document control system.

Mechanical Properties of 430 Bar (Annealed)

Condition Tensile Strength Yield Strength (0.2%) Elongation Reduction of Area Hardness (HBW) Hardness (HRBW)
Annealed 705–790 °C ≥ 415 MPa (60 ksi) ≥ 207 MPa (30 ksi) ≥ 20% (in 50 mm) ≥ 45% ≤ 183 ≤ 89

Values are minimum requirements (maximum for hardness) per ASTM A276 for hot-finished or cold-finished annealed bar. Typical properties in commercial practice exceed these minima: tensile strength approximately 500 MPa, yield strength approximately 260 MPa, and elongation typically 24% in 50 mm gauge length. Annealing is performed at 705-790 °C followed by air cooling; 430 is not hardenable by quenching and any cold work introduced during straightening or finishing is removed by the final anneal. The elastic modulus is 200 GPa and density is 7.7 g/cm³. SHUNFU METAL conducts tensile and Brinell hardness testing on every heat-treatment lot and records full results on the EN 10204 3.1 inspection certificate delivered with each order. For forged bars above 200 mm diameter, supplemental ultrasonic testing per ASTM A388 is applied to verify freedom from internal discontinuities, and macro-etch examination per ASTM E381 is optionally available for critical rotating-component applications.
