The impact of typhoon “In-fa” on the upstream and downstream industries of steel in China

Typhoon No. 6 of 2021 “In-fa” has landed at noon on July 25 from Zhoushan and moved northwest, affecting the Shanghai area, with typhoon intensity at landfall, central pressure of 965 hPa, central maximum wind speed of 38 m / s. Shanghai, Zhejiang, Jiangsu and other places are affected by different degrees of rainfall.

The landfall of typhoon “In-fa” has also affected the refined nickel market in Shanghai. The situation is as follows.

1, the terminal, affected by the typhoon, Yangshan Port and Wusong Port terminal has stopped operations on the 24th, and suspend the relevant lifting business. At present, cargo ships coming to Shanghai are unable to enter or leave the port and load or unload cargoes.

2, the bonded area, Shanghai Waigaoqiao Free Trade Zone warehousing and logistics companies suspended operations, business personnel are working at home, and plans to resume tomorrow after the typhoon.

3, the customs and social warehouses, the current inventory of goods in the major social warehouses in Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Shanghai areas were not damaged by the typhoon, but some of the goods transported.

The ports along the river inside and outside received notice from the Maritime Bureau, from the night of the 25th has stopped in and out of cargo operations, according to the typhoon trend, is expected to be lifted in the early morning of the 28th, the daily impact of port evacuation volume of about 546,000 tons, the average daily unloading volume impact or more than 650,000 tons. Affected by this typhoon, along the river area steel mills import ore transport comprehensive restrictions, their own terminals are temporarily not operating, but it is understood that the typhoon before the steel mills have prepared materials, production is not affected for the time being. From a comprehensive point of view, typhoon “In-fa” on the port operations, steel mills transportation is blocked but have prepared in advance, the current production is normal. At the same time to ensure safety, Zhejiang Hangzhou, Shaoxing, Jiaxing, Huzhou, Ningbo, Wenzhou, Taizhou and other terminals in the port area yesterday to start a comprehensive anti-typhoon plan, today all holiday, stop all inbound and outbound operations, the specific resumption of operations time depending on the impact of the typhoon to be determined. Affected by the typhoon transit, the province is expected to rain next week, especially in the north-central region, the downstream construction site construction progress is limited, demand remains low.

By the impact of typhoon “In-fa”, yesterday, Zhejiang Shao Hangzhou and Shaoxing local areas have been heavy rainfall weather, there are different degrees of waterlogging, the local has entered the state of flood control, with the typhoon gradually moved to the northwest of Zhejiang, 25-29 days, Zhejiang Province, Ningbo, Shaoxing, Jiaxing, Hangzhou, Huzhou and other places will have different degrees of The heavy rain and windy weather, Jiaxing, Ningbo, Shaoxing, Hangzhou and other areas of the scrap site has notified suppliers to stop receiving, prepare for the defense of the typhoon. At present, the scrap market in most areas of Zhejiang has entered a state of stagnation, and there are basically no transactions in the scrap market. Some of the steel mills in Zhejiang Province to prepare in advance to improve their own scrap inventory to ensure that the typhoon landing production is not affected. Market, the province-wide has begun to do typhoon defense work in advance, especially the coastal area of the city. It is understood that some ports in Taizhou, Wenzhou, Ningbo and other places have been closed, the sea transport capacity began to weaken, the scrap steel base dock shutdown, in which Taizhou area scrap steel merchants are basically in a state of suspension, Wenzhou, Ningbo scrap steel collection drop significantly, basically down to about 20% of the usual collection, the overall look of the coastal region of Zhejiang scrap steel market immediately into a state of stagnation. According to the China Meteorological Administration forecast, the typhoon will gradually move northwest after logging, the northern cities of Zhejiang are likely to be affected and the scope will be expanded, which means that the scrap steel base receiving in Hangzhou, Shaoxing, Jiaxing, Huzhou, etc. will also be affected. Short-term market scrap resources are tight, combined with the impact of typhoon weather, the amount of scrap resources contraction will intensify, the recent price trend of finished products relatively strong support for scrap prices, therefore, it is expected that short-term scrap prices in Zhejiang area is stable operation.

Henan suffered extreme rainfall, Xuchang, a local 200-series integrated stainless steel production enterprises affected by this Monday (July 19) full shutdown, the specific recovery time is still unknown, is expected to affect the low nickel iron production of nearly 10,000 tons, the local transport is also in a state of paralysis. No coincidence, the typhoon for the sea transport also caused impact. In the first half of 2021, China imported 14,778,500 tons of nickel ore from the Philippines, accounting for 90% of total imports, and 1,574,400 tons of ferronickel from Indonesia, accounting for 85% of total imports. Nickel ore and ferro-nickel ships from the Philippines and Indonesia to China are required to pass through this sea route. According to industry feedback, the current loading of nickel ore in the Philippines is still normal, but out of concern for the unknown impact of typhoon “In-fa”, recently pre-issued and has issued a number of ships in the port, waiting at sea, said that they will wait and see what happens before making the next sailing arrangements, and this will somewhat extend the nickel ore, nickel-iron arrival time, for some raw material inventory shortage factory or will have an impact on the
