Project Description
AISI 630, 1.4542 Precipitation Hardening Stainless Steel
Product Description
AISI 630, 1.4542 (also known as 17-4 PH) is a premium martensitic precipitation-hardening stainless steel that combines exceptional strength, good corrosion resistance, and excellent mechanical properties. This versatile alloy features a carefully balanced chemical composition including 15.0-17.0% chromium, 3.0-5.0% nickel, 3.0-5.0% copper, and niobium (columbium) additions that enable significant strengthening through a relatively simple heat treatment process. Unlike conventional stainless steels, AISI 630 can be supplied in a solution-treated condition and subsequently hardened through a low-temperature aging treatment, yielding outstanding mechanical properties while minimizing distortion. This unique combination of high strength, good corrosion resistance, and dimensional stability during heat treatment makes AISI 630, 1.4542 an ideal choice for demanding applications across multiple industries.
Applications

Corrosion Resistance
AISI 630, 1.4542 precipitation hardening stainless steel offers good corrosion resistance properties:
- General Corrosion: Good resistance to atmospheric corrosion, fresh water, and mild industrial environments. Comparable to Type 304 stainless steel in many environments.
- Stress Corrosion Cracking: Better resistance than austenitic stainless steels like 304 and 316 in chloride environments.
- Pitting and Crevice Corrosion: Moderate resistance to localized corrosion. The H1150 condition typically offers better corrosion resistance than the higher-strength conditions.
- Oxidation Resistance: Good resistance to oxidation at temperatures up to approximately 550°C (1022°F).
- Galvanic Corrosion: Care should be taken when coupling with dissimilar metals in wet environments.
For applications requiring both high strength and maximum corrosion resistance, the double aging treatment (H1150D) is recommended as it provides the best combination of corrosion resistance and mechanical properties.
