2205 Duplex Stainless Steel Pipe / Tubing – SHUNFU METAL

Deepwater. HPHT. Corrosive reservoirs. These conditions destroy ordinary stainless steels within months. 2205 Duplex Stainless Steel—also designated as 1.4462, UNS S31803, or 22Cr—was engineered precisely for these hostile environments. It resists what kills 316L. It handles what Super 13Cr cannot. And when operators need bulk quantities delivered to specification, they turn to manufacturers with metallurgical control from melt to final inspection.

SHUNFU METAL produces 2205 duplex seamless pipe and tubing for global oilfield service companies. We supply Grade 65 through Grade 140. Cold-worked or solution-annealed. API 5CRA / ISO 13680 compliant. Our facility runs 24/7 to meet the tonnage demands of major drilling contractors, OCTG distributors, and subsea equipment fabricators across 52 countries.

This page covers everything procurement engineers need: chemistry limits, mechanical properties by grade, dimensional availability, heat treatment parameters, machining characteristics, and sour service limits per NACE MR0175/ISO 15156. Skip the sales pitch. Get the data.

What Makes 2205 Duplex Different

The name “duplex” describes the microstructure. It’s not austenitic like 304 or 316. Not ferritic like 430. It’s both. Approximately 40-50% ferrite phase surrounded by austenite pools. This dual-phase structure delivers a combination impossible to achieve with single-phase alloys.

Ferritic contribution: high strength and stress corrosion cracking (SCC) resistance. Austenitic contribution: toughness, formability, and general corrosion resistance. Combined: a material that tolerates CO₂, resists chloride pitting, handles moderate H₂S, and delivers yield strengths from 65 ksi to 140 ksi depending on cold work processing.

2205 is the workhorse of the duplex family. More tonnage of 2205 gets installed in oil and gas service annually than all super duplex grades combined. Why? Balanced performance at rational cost.

The alloy contains 21-23% chromium, 4.5-6.5% nickel, 2.5-3.5% molybdenum, and 0.08-0.20% nitrogen. This nitrogen addition separates modern 2205 from older duplex formulations. Nitrogen stabilizes the austenite, improves pitting resistance, and boosts strength without sacrificing weldability. The Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number (PREN) sits below 40—typically around 35—which classifies 2205 under MR0175/ISO15156 Table A.24 and A.25 for controlled sour service.

Oilfield Applications

Downhole environments push materials to failure. CO₂ partial pressures above 30 psi. Chloride concentrations exceeding 100,000 ppm. Bottomhole temperatures approaching 400°F. Trace H₂S that initiates sulfide stress cracking in susceptible alloys. 2205 duplex handles this matrix of threats when material selection matches the specific well chemistry.

Primary Application Zones

HPHT Sweet Wells

High-pressure, high-temperature reservoirs dominated by CO₂ with minimal H₂S. 2205 resists CO₂ corrosion and chloride pitting where 13Cr and Super 13Cr suffer localized attack. Temperature limit: 450°F for annealed grades in sour conditions.

Production Tubing

Completion strings in corrosive wells where carbon steel requires continuous inhibition. 2205 tubing eliminates chemical treatment costs in many moderate sour applications. Long-term integrity reduces workover frequency.

Subsea Flowlines

Tie-back flowlines from subsea trees to platforms. 2205 provides the external seawater resistance and internal production fluid compatibility that carbon steel clad or lined systems cannot match at equivalent wall thickness.

Downhole Equipment

Packers, mandrels, hangers, and other completion accessories. Cold-worked 2205 delivers 110-140 ksi yield strength for components under extreme mechanical loading in corrosive environments.

Material selection requires complete environmental assessment. H₂S partial pressure, CO₂ content, chloride concentration, pH, and maximum temperature must all be evaluated against the limits in ISO 15156-3. The 2205 grade is not a universal solution. It fills the gap between Super 13Cr and more expensive 25Cr super duplex or nickel alloys. When the conditions fit, 2205 delivers exceptional value.

Alternative Designations and Equivalent Standards

Global supply chains reference this alloy under multiple names. Procurement specifications, MTRs, and customs documentation may use any of the following interchangeably:

  • UNS S31803 – Unified Numbering System
  • EN 1.4462 – European Norm designation
  • 22Cr / 22 Chrome – Oilfield shorthand
  • F51 – ASTM forging designation
  • SAF 2205 – Sandvik trade name
  • 2205 Duplex – Common commercial name
  • API 5CRA Group 2, 22-5-3 – OCTG classification

All these names describe the same base chemistry. The differences lie in product form, heat treatment condition, and mechanical property requirements. When sourcing tubulars for oilfield service, always specify the governing standard (API 5CRA, ISO 13680, or equivalent), grade designation, and any supplementary requirements for sour service compliance.

SHUNFU METAL maintains inventory and production capacity across the full API 5CRA Group 2 grade range. Our sales engineers verify specification alignment before order confirmation. No ambiguity. No mismatches on delivery.

Chemical Composition

Chemistry defines corrosion performance. Every element in 2205 serves a purpose. The table below shows the specified limits per API 5CRA / ISO 13680:

Element C Cr Ni Mo Mn Si N P S Fe
Min % 21.0 4.5 2.5 0.08 BAL
Max % 0.03 23.0 6.5 3.5 2.0 1.0 0.20 0.03 0.02 BAL

Element Functions

Chromium (21-23%): The primary corrosion resistance driver. Forms the passive chromium oxide layer that protects against uniform and localized attack. Higher chromium improves pitting resistance in chloride environments.

Molybdenum (2.5-3.5%): Enhances resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, particularly in reducing acid and chloride solutions. Critical for performance in downhole brines.

Nitrogen (0.08-0.20%): The secret weapon in modern duplex alloys. Nitrogen partitions preferentially into the austenite phase, strengthening it and preventing chromium/molybdenum depletion during welding. Also improves PREN and provides solid-solution strengthening.

Nickel (4.5-6.5%): Austenite stabilizer. Balances the ferrite/austenite ratio to achieve the target 40-50% ferrite content after solution annealing.

Carbon (≤0.03%): Kept low to prevent carbide precipitation during welding and heat treatment. Carbides rob chromium from the matrix, creating sensitization and intergranular corrosion susceptibility.

SHUNFU METAL sources 2205 from electric arc furnace (EAF) or blast furnace operations followed by Vacuum Oxygen Decarburization (VOD) or Argon Oxygen Decarburization (AOD) refining. These secondary refining processes achieve the low carbon and sulfur levels essential for weldability and corrosion resistance.

Heat Treatment

Duplex stainless steels demand precise thermal processing. The austenite/ferrite balance, mechanical properties, and corrosion resistance all depend on correct heat treatment. Mistakes create problems that inspection may not catch until the pipe fails in service.

Solution Annealing (Standard Condition)

Solution annealing produces the baseline condition for 2205 duplex pipe and tubing. The process involves heating to 1870-2010°F (1020-1100°C), holding for sufficient time to dissolve any secondary phases, and rapid quenching—typically water quench—to retain the solution-annealed structure.

Key parameters:

  • Temperature: 1870-2010°F (1020-1100°C)
  • Minimum soak time per wall thickness
  • Quench: Water or accelerated cooling
  • Target ferrite: 40-50% (measured by point count)

Annealed 2205 delivers yield strengths of 65-75 ksi with elongation exceeding 25%. This condition offers maximum corrosion resistance and ductility for service up to 450°F in sour environments per ISO 15156 Table A.24.

Cold Working (High-Strength Grades)

Higher strength requirements—110, 125, or 140 ksi yield—demand cold working after solution annealing. SHUNFU METAL achieves these properties through controlled cold pilgering or cold drawing processes that work-harden the material uniformly through the wall.

Cold-worked 2205 follows ISO 15156 Table A.25 limitations for sour service. The 140 ksi grade carries restrictions and is generally not recommended for H₂S-containing environments. Always verify environmental limits against the latest revision of ISO 15156-3.

Critical Warning: Extended exposure above 600°F (315°C) embrittles 2205 duplex through sigma phase precipitation. This applies to all grades. Never specify 2205 for continuous service above this temperature limit. For temperatures exceeding 450°F in sour service, consider 25Cr super duplex or nickel alloy alternatives.

Mechanical Properties by Grade

API 5CRA / ISO 13680 Group 2 defines multiple strength grades for 2205 duplex. Selection depends on well conditions, loading requirements, and sour service constraints.

Grade Yield Strength (ksi) Tensile Strength (ksi) Elongation (%) Hardness (HRC max) Condition
65 65 min / 90 max 90 min 25 min 26 Annealed
75 75 min / 100 max 90 min 25 min 26 Annealed
110 110 min / 140 max 125 min 11 min 36 Cold Worked
125 125 min / 150 max 130 min 10 min 36 Cold Worked
140 140 min / 160 max 145 min 9 min 38 Cold Worked

Sour Service Limits per NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156

The governing document for material selection in sour oilfield service is ISO 15156-3 (incorporating NACE MR0175). For 2205 duplex:

Annealed Grades (65, 75): Table A.24 applies. Maximum H₂S partial pressure 3.0 psi. Maximum temperature 450°F. Hardness must not exceed 26 HRC.

Cold-Worked Grades (110, 125): Table A.25 applies. Maximum H₂S partial pressure 3.0 psi. Hardness limits as specified. Verify current revision for temperature restrictions.

Grade 140: Not recommended for sour service. Sulfide stress cracking risk increases substantially above 36 HRC. Use only in sweet service applications.

Environmental limits evolve as industry data accumulates. Always reference the latest published revision of ISO 15156 before final material qualification.

Physical Properties

Design engineers require accurate physical property data for stress analysis, thermal expansion calculations, and equipment interface design. The following table provides typical values for 2205 duplex at service-relevant temperatures:

Property Unit 70°F 200°F 400°F
Density lb/in³ 0.28
Thermal Expansion ×10⁻⁶ /°F 7.0 7.5 8.0
Elastic Modulus psi × 10⁶ 29.0 28.2 27.0
Poisson Ratio 0.24 0.24 0.24
Thermal Conductivity BTU/ft·h·°F 8 9 10
Specific Heat BTU/lb·°F 0.12 0.12 0.12

Note the lower thermal expansion coefficient compared to austenitic stainless steels. This reduces thermal stress in constrained systems and minimizes seal movement in completion assemblies.

Corrosion Resistance Performance

Corrosion drives material selection in oilfield applications. 2205 duplex occupies a specific performance envelope that procurement engineers must understand to avoid both over-specification (cost waste) and under-specification (premature failure).

General Corrosion

The high chromium (22%), molybdenum (3%), and nitrogen (0.18% typical) content delivers superior uniform corrosion resistance compared to 316L or 317L in most oil and gas production environments. In CO₂-dominated systems without significant H₂S, 2205 often requires no corrosion allowance—a major cost advantage in wall thickness reduction.

Pitting and Crevice Corrosion

Chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen combine to resist localized attack. The PREN formula (Cr + 3.3×Mo + 16×N) yields approximately 35 for typical 2205 compositions. This provides resistance to pitting in chloride solutions up to approximately 20-25°C higher than 316L under equivalent conditions.

Crevice corrosion remains the most severe form of localized attack for any stainless steel. Design connections and sealing surfaces to minimize crevice geometry. Avoid tight gaps, overlapping surfaces, and deposits that create differential aeration cells.

Stress Corrosion Cracking (SCC)

The ferritic phase in 2205 provides substantial resistance to chloride SCC. While austenitic grades like 316L crack readily in hot chloride environments, 2205 resists SCC at temperatures up to approximately 150°C (302°F) in chloride-containing solutions. This property makes 2205 suitable for many applications where austenitic stainless steels fail.

Caustic Environments

The ferrite phase also contributes to caustic cracking resistance. 2205 performs well in alkaline process streams where austenitic grades suffer caustic stress corrosion cracking.

Machining and Processing

Duplex stainless steels machine differently than austenitic grades. The higher strength and work-hardening tendency require adapted machining practices. SHUNFU METAL’s processing facility handles all standard oilfield machining operations:

Machining Guidelines for End Users

If your shop will machine 2205 duplex components, observe these proven practices:

Tooling: Use positive rake carbide inserts (coated grades preferred). High-speed steel dulls rapidly. Ceramic tooling works for finishing operations but lacks toughness for interrupted cuts.

Speeds and Feeds: Reduce cutting speeds 15-20% compared to 316L parameters. Increase feed rates to minimize work hardening of the cut surface. Light cuts cause more problems than aggressive material removal.

Coolant: Flood coolant essential. Maintain concentration per manufacturer recommendation. Chloride content in water-based coolants should stay below 200 ppm to prevent corrosion staining.

Work Hardening: The machined surface hardens during cutting. Never dwell. Never rub. Keep the tool cutting. If a pass is interrupted, increase depth of cut before resuming to get below the hardened layer.
