AISI 410, 1.4006 – General Purpose Martensitic Stainless Steel | SHUNFU METAL

AISI 410, 1.4006 General Purpose Martensitic Stainless Steel

Product Description

AISI 410, 1.4006 is the most widely used general-purpose martensitic stainless steel, offering an excellent balance of mechanical properties, corrosion resistance, and fabrication characteristics. With a carefully controlled chemical composition featuring 11.5-13.5% chromium and 0.08-0.15% carbon, this versatile grade provides good hardenability while maintaining better weldability than higher-carbon martensitic grades. AISI 410 (1.4006) can be hardened by heat treatment to achieve a wide range of strength and hardness levels, making it exceptionally versatile across numerous applications. This cost-effective alloy delivers reliable performance in mild corrosive environments while providing superior strength compared to austenitic stainless steels, positioning it as an ideal choice for applications requiring a combination of modest corrosion resistance and good mechanical properties.

Applications

AISI 410, 1.4006 martensitic stainless steel is specifically designed for applications requiring a combination of moderate strength, hardness, and basic corrosion resistance. Its primary applications include:

  • Turbine blades and steam turbine components
  • Valve parts for oil, gas, and petrochemical industries
  • Pump components and shafts
  • Fasteners and bolting for general industrial use
  • Kitchen utensils and mild food handling equipment
  • Structural components in chemical processing equipment
  • Petroleum refining equipment components
  • Mining and coal handling equipment
  • General engineering applications requiring modest corrosion resistance
  • Automotive trim and components
  • Wear plates and wear-resistant parts
  • Paper mill equipment and doctor blades

The excellent combination of mechanical properties and basic corrosion resistance makes AISI 410, 1.4006 particularly valuable for applications requiring strength and durability in mildly corrosive environments where the higher cost of more corrosion-resistant alloys is not justified.

Heat Treatment

AISI 410, 1.4006 achieves its optimal properties through a carefully controlled heat treatment process:

  • Annealing: 750-830°C (1382-1526°F) followed by slow cooling to achieve maximum softness for machining or forming
  • Hardening (Austenitizing): 925-1010°C (1697-1850°F) followed by oil or air quenching
  • Tempering: 150-750°C (302-1382°F) depending on desired hardness and toughness requirements
  • Stress Relieving: 200-300°C (392-572°F) for 1-2 hours when required for dimensional stability

AISI 410, 1.4006 can achieve hardness values up to 40-45 HRC when properly heat treated, with tempering temperature being the primary variable for adjusting final hardness and mechanical properties.

Tempering Chart

Tempering Temperature Approximate Hardness (HRC) Typical Application
200-300°C (392-572°F) 38-43 Maximum hardness applications
400-500°C (752-932°F) 30-38 General industrial components
550-650°C (1022-1202°F) 22-28 Maximum toughness applications
650-750°C (1202-1382°F) 20-22 Maximum corrosion resistance

Corrosion Resistance

AISI 410, 1.4006 martensitic stainless steel offers moderate corrosion resistance properties:

  • General Corrosion: Provides good resistance to mild atmospheric conditions, fresh water, and weak acids and bases. It is suitable for mildly corrosive industrial environments.
  • Oxidation Resistance: Good resistance to scaling at temperatures up to approximately 650°C (1202°F).
  • Pitting and Crevice Corrosion: Limited resistance to localized corrosion in chloride-containing environments.
  • Stress Corrosion Cracking: Susceptible to SCC in chloride environments at elevated temperatures.
  • Intergranular Corrosion: Can be susceptible after improper heat treatment; proper tempering minimizes this risk.

For optimal corrosion resistance, AISI 410, 1.4006 should be used in the hardened and tempered condition, ideally with high-temperature tempering. Corrosion resistance is generally better in highly tempered conditions (lower hardness) than in low-temperature tempered conditions (higher hardness). Surface finishing treatments such as passivation can significantly improve corrosion resistance.

Fabrication Characteristics

AISI 410, 1.4006 offers the following fabrication characteristics:

  • Machinability: Good in the annealed condition (approximately 60-65% of free-cutting steel). Much better machinability than austenitic stainless steels when in the annealed condition.
  • Weldability: Fair; better than higher carbon martensitic grades. Preheating to 200-300°C (392-572°F) before welding and post-weld heat treatment are recommended to prevent cracking.
  • Formability: Good in the annealed condition; cold forming should be performed in the annealed state followed by heat treatment.
  • Hot Working: Can be hot worked at 1150-950°C (2100-1740°F).
  • Cold Working: Limited cold working capability in the annealed condition; work hardening rate is higher than carbon steels.
  • Polishability: Good; can achieve high-quality surface finishes.
